Applications open for the Â鶹ÒùÔº advisory council
As part of the changes to Â鶹ÒùԺ’s governance, we are creating the Â鶹ÒùÔº advisory council to increase member voice and allow for discussions about the discipline to help shape the strategic direction of Â鶹ÒùÔº without the legal and governance requirements of trusteeship. More about these changes can be found here. Ìý
The inaugural advisory council will be in place from 2027 and will comprise of the ten Â鶹ÒùÔº trustees and a board of ten additional Â鶹ÒùÔº members. Some of these places will be held by those currently serving on Council but finishing their term as trustees at the end of 2026. We are therefore recruiting four positions to the Â鶹ÒùÔº advisory council. One of these will be ringfenced for a practitioner – a member based outside of higher education, ideally in school, college, or similar setting. There are no specific skills or specialisms that we are seeking, our members have a wide range of experiences in various settings which will help strengthen member voice within Â鶹ÒùԺ’s governance.Ìý
The main duties of the role include:Ìý
- Assist the trustee board in driving forward the Â鶹ÒùÔº strategic plan through reviewing Â鶹ÒùԺ’s planned activityÌý
- Provide expertise and knowledge of the educational research sector to feed into Â鶹ÒùԺ’s overarching activity and strategyÌý
- Ensure Â鶹ÒùԺ’s member voice and needs are at the core of our activitiesÌý
- Act as a neutral, trusted group for trustees to discuss potential ideas and activityÌý
- Serve as ambassadors of the organisation where requiredÌý

To applyÌý
Please complete the application by clicking ‘Apply Now’ at the top of this page. The application question is ‘What perspectives (experience/ skills/ research specialism) would you bring to the Â鶹ÒùÔº advisory council?’.ÌýÌý
Â鶹ÒùÔº reserves the right to shortlist and interview prior to election. This process would be led by relevant senior Â鶹ÒùÔº office staff and senior members of Â鶹ÒùÔº Council. We are keen to ensure the new council represents a wide cross-section of the Â鶹ÒùÔº membership.ÌýÌý
The deadline for applications is 23:59 on Monday 19th October 2026.ÌýÌý
For any queries, either formal or informal, or should you require the application or information in a different format, please contact [email protected]Ìý
Eligibility and Time CommitmentÌýÌý
To be eligible to stand, candidates must be members of Â鶹ÒùÔº at the time of application and remain so for the duration of their term.Ìý
The time commitment is not onerous, there are two in person meetings of the advisory council per year, full expenses paid in line with Â鶹ÒùÔº policies. The dates in 2027 are Tuesday 15 June and one date in November around the Â鶹ÒùÔº AGM event (date TBC). It is expected the successful candidates will attend both these meetings in-person. There may also be a small amount of correspondence between meetings. Â鶹ÒùÔº does not normally run hybrid meetings so a commitment to attend these in person unless otherwise stated is essential.Ìý
Council members may also be asked to serve on one of Â鶹ÒùԺ’s committees although this is not mandatory.ÌýÌý
As part of our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, we welcome applications from members from groups currently underrepresented in our governance and leadership, particularly those who bring intersectional perspectives and lived experience of the issues affecting our society. We are committed to addressing structural inequalities and ensuring that our governance and voice reflects the full diversity of the Â鶹ÒùÔº membership. We recognise that a broad range of perspectives, skills, knowledge, and lived experiences strengthens decision-making and enhances the effectiveness of our governance.Ìý
