This TEAN webinar focuses on the contested definition of ‘professional inquiry’ as a signature pedagogy for teacher education and development. The session will begin with a short presentation conceptualising professional inquiry, embracing considerable variations in approach, and arguing for its significance as a powerful signature pedagogy for teacher educators. The variations of professional inquiry considered include the clinical practice model with pre-service teachers but also approaches informed by values-based collaborative action research and by lesson study in professional learning support for experienced teachers. Key contested characteristics of professional inquiry which are open for debate include ownership of the research question, trust and ethics, and critical engagement with both teachers’ practical wisdom and the relevant literature. After discussion and sharing of practice, there will be an update from the editors on progress with ‘Professional Inquiry’ which is a new open access Â鶹ÒùÔº TEAN publication, of which the first issue will be published in spring 2027. In practical terms, the session will help to clarify to what extent professional inquiry can be a signature pedagogy for teacher education and development, how professional inquiry work can form the basis for a TEAN conference proposal, and how the new Â鶹ÒùÔº publication entitled ‘Professional Inquiry’ will help to provoke, share and evaluate professional inquiry by teacher educators.
