This TEAN webinar will critically engage with the concept of teacher resilience and the implications for teacher education. The session will begin with a short presentation of findings from an ESRC-funded study which adopted a social-ecological approach to teacher resilience, conceptualising resilience as a dynamic process that operates across systems rather than as a fixed personal trait. A model of resilience will be explored which identifies factors influencing teachers’ capacity to thrive across five levels relating to: self, school, social, system and society. Following discussion of these findings, the will be introduced – Ecological Approaches to Supporting Educator Resilience – a free, interactive toolkit shaped by the research. This resource is designed to be used flexibly as a professional development tool by student teachers, teachers, school leaders and teacher educators. The session will explore the different ways in which the toolkit might be embedded within teacher education in order to support students as they embark on their careers in what can be a very rewarding, but also a very challenging, profession. Attendees will takeaway practical resources, including teaching materials and self-study resources, to use within university and school-based teacher education programmes and mentoring practices.
