Pamela Abbott, Professor

Chair in Education at University of Aberdeen

Pamela Abbott is an Emeritus Professor of Education in the School of Education at the University of Aberdeen and Director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Group on Promoting Children and Adolescent Mental Wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa. Her research addresses the structural mechanisms of gender, inequality, and human development in rapidly transitioning societies, underpinned by a commitment to producing empirical work that drives transformative social change. Methodologically guided by applied critical realism and theoretically anchored in sociological Marxism, my research examines how macro-level political economies and global structural shifts shape human capabilities, local institutions, and community wellbeing.
My extensive comparative international research has included examining post-communist transitions in the former Soviet Union, post-2010 uprisings across the MENA region, and socioeconomic development trajectories in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), most notably Rwanda. In her current research, she applies her methodological and theoretical lenses to a vital human development agenda, focusing on improving health, quality of life, and life outcomes for children in sub-Saharan Africa. This current work bridges structural critique with actionable, localised interventions designed to support human flourishing. The research in Ethiopia and Rwanda examines the potential of whole-school mindfulness interventions to transform schools so pupils can flourish. By aligning robust explanatory theory with rigorous field practice, we aim to generate critical insights that inform equitable educational policies and improve the daily realities of vulnerable communities worldwide.
