Julia Skilton is a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh, supervised by Professor Laura Colucci-Gray and Dr Ramsey Affifi. Her research – Crafting STEAM: an inquiry into material practices to enact a sustainable education – originates from fifteen years of education programming and social impact work in the jewellery industry. She focuses on the educational opportunities of material engagement, specifically the technical craft of jewellery, through the lens of STEAM. She works with the theory of enactive cognition to provide an operational theory for exploring the learning process through a phenomenological autoethnography and ethnography, as well as arts-based methods of analysis to make the invisible visible. Her research interests are: ecological and embodied approaches to education; material learning; STEAM.
