John is Emeritus Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminology, University of Essex. John works on the sociology of disasters, emergencies, and existential threat. He also works on the sociology of education. John is the author of 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence in the Capitalist University: Academic Labour, Commodification, and Value鈥 (Routledge, 2021). His most recent book is 鈥淎pocalypse Capitalism: Economic Visions After Nuclear War鈥 (Bristol University Press, 2026).
