Anna Llewellyn is an Associate Professor at Durham University, whose work is informed by education, sociology, and cultural studies.
Her catalogue of research, and wider academic work, are all concerned with exploring social inequalities and advancing social justice within educational institutions and systems.
Anna’s recent projects have centred on being queer within educational institutions. Her 2020 study focused on LGBTQ+ teachers within secondary schools, and analysed the complexities of operating within and between heteronormativity and strains of diversity. Resulting academic papers are published in the journals Sex Education; Sports, Education and Society; Frontiers in Education; Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, as well as a book chapter (in press) with Springer in Hong, Cross Francis, and Schutz (Co-editors)’s, Teacher Identity Development: Expanding Conceptualizations in Challenging Contexts. Her current British Academy funded research is centred around ‘non-traditional’ LGBTQ+ students experiences of belonging and inclusion at universities. Both studies produced practitioner centred reports. https://durham-repository.worktribe.com/output/1627530 https://durham-repository.worktribe.com/output/5192670
More broadly, she has published on: sexuality; gender; teacher identity; childhood and youth; social media; policy; and mathematics education – which her PhD, and subsequent 2018 book Manufacturing the Mathematical Child was adapted from. All of these studies centre on how people are included or not, within social systems and structures.
Anna is also deeply committed to teaching and supporting students at all levels, including as an experienced PGR supervisor and examiner.
She is a recipient of an Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award at Durham University and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
