‘Kaleidoscope Gazing’: How to gain flashes of insight when analysing your qualitative data

Introduction: At first sight

Conducting and interpreting complex sociological research can be difficult, even for seasoned researchers. Handling qualitative data is frequently a messy, iterative process, akin to navigating a maze. offers an innovative way to creatively examine such data, for both experienced and early career researchers. This blog post focuses on how qualitative data might be imaginatively analysed using the metaphor of a kaleidoscope, an approach Graybill (2025) argues can be powerful for scholarly thinking.

Drawing on students’ experiences of transitioning from further to higher education from a grounded theory, PhD study, ‘Kaleidoscope Gazing’ illuminates how complex datasets might be puzzled through. This method can help researchers across multifarious contexts grasp the complexity and fluidity of an individual’s situated experiences.

Peering into the abyss

Thinking through the lens of a kaleidoscope pieces together ontological patterns of similarity and difference to ‘visualise’ what factors impact people’s worlds. It encourages deeper consideration of the choices researchers make when constructing meaning from data. Being actively engaged in the process leads to a series of decisions such as ‘how’ and ‘why’ we handle data in particular ways, that must be justified in a doctoral thesis or journal article (Beckett, 2022).

Figure 1 shows how aspects of transitioning students’ experiences, such as their emotions, peers and lecturers, can be mapped onto a kaleidoscopic template. Pictorially representing data as kaleidoscopes facilitated a visual charting of patterns between individual’s lives over several years. Literally ‘casting light’ on them in ways that ‘weave the fractured story back together’ (Glaser, 1978) over time. Each person’s experiences were fluid, and so their individual patterns were in flux; every twist of the dial created a totally different pattern, just like a real kaleidoscope. The tumbling elements of their lives cascading together to inform their realities of being at university, which the ‘Kaleidoscope Gazing’ approach facilitated.

Manually mapping codes onto acetate kaleidoscope templates is a creative process, requiring total immersion in data. This can be enjoyable, absorbing and fun, leading to greater insights – flashes of inspiration! Inventively ‘playing’ and ‘colouring in’ templates, ironically, yields great depth of knowledge where the kaleidoscope images become increasingly sophisticated, as the fieldnote below illustrates. The gleams of information hint at deeper, more layered knowledge than perhaps more traditional ways of data analysis provide, arguably the prize all researchers seek, irrespective of their experience. For example, one participant said, ‘I have become a social butterfly, just swimming in and out of different groups’, while she previously considered herself very shy. The quote illuminates how new undergraduates initially prioritise the social side of being at university over their academic work. Also, how new aspects to their identities are forming, which would not have been as apparent without employing ‘Kaleidoscope Gazing’.

So, what next? Looking beyond

For newer researchers, ‘Kaleidoscope Gazing’ also offers the additional benefits of better understanding grounded theory, reflexivity and constructivism as they become operationalised through practical application. These can otherwise remain abstract, theoretical terms. The approach could also be used collaboratively on team-based projects, offering opportunities to triangulate researchers’ perspectives, and gain greater reflexive insights. Furthermore, its usefulness as a method has the potential to extend to other qualitative research fields, such as the healthcare sector or social policy contexts. It can be applied and used in unlimited ways, restricted only by the researcher’s own imagination. Graybill (2025) emphasises that further studies that show how creative data methods have been utilised are needed. Showcasing other invented and creative ways to analyse data will hopefully encourage other researchers to experiment in fresh and exciting ways with the practice of research method approaches.
